Researcher Pengwei Hu, Xinjiang Technical Institute of Physics and Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, China

National Overseas High-Level Talent

His main research directions include artificial intelligence representation learning, complex network analysis, biomedical molecular network analysis, and intelligent organoids. He has been selected for the National Overseas High-Level Talent Introduction Program and the Tianchi Plan Leading Talent Program. He has presided over or participated in projects such as the Xinjiang Outstanding Youth Science Fund, the National Natural Science Foundation General Program, and the Youth Program. He previously served as the Chief AI Scientist at Merck Group in Germany, responsible for global innovative research and development at the intersection of artificial intelligence and biomedicine. Currently, he serves as an associate editor for several SCI journals, including BMC Bioinformatics. He has been a program committee member and area chair for top international conferences such as AAAI, ACL, EMNLP, BIBM, and AMIA, an executive committee member of the CCF Bioinformatics Special Committee, and a member of the Biomedical Big Data Special Committee of the Chinese Society of Biotechnology. His awards include the IJCAI DCM Best Paper, ICIC Best Paper, and the first prize in the Intelligent Auxiliary Diagnosis Competition of the Chinese Medical Association.

Prof. Chengwen Luo, Shenzhen University, China

Chengwen Luo obtained the Ph.D degree from School of Computing, National University of Singapore (NUS). Before joining Shenzhen University, he was a postdoctoral researcher at CSE, The University of New South Wales (UNSW). Currently he is a distinguished professor in School of Artificial Intelligence, Shenzhen University. His research aims at exploiting AI-empowered sensing and learning to develop fundamental technologies that are essential in building innovative human-machine cooperation systems.

Prof. Yao Lu, Sun Yat-sen University, China

National Level Talent

Yao Lu, Ph.D., is a Professor at the School of Computer Science, Sun Yat-sen University, Director of the Institute of Scientific Computing, Doctoral Supervisor, and a Standing Committee Member of the 10th Guangdong Provincial Association for Science and Technology. He has been selected for national-level talent programs and recognized as a "Yat-sen Outstanding Scholar" by Sun Yat-sen University.

He previously studied at the University of Science and Technology of China, the Academy of Mathematics and Systems Science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Syracuse University in the United States. After earning his Ph.D., he conducted research on breast cancer medical imaging at the University of Michigan. He served as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow and Research Investigator at the University of Michigan Medical School.

Currently, he is a Principal Investigator at the State Key Laboratory of Oncology in South China, Chairman of the Guangdong High Performance Computing Society, Vice Chairman of the Ultrasound Medicine Innovation and Development Management Branch of the Guangdong Medical Industry Association, Vice Chairman of the Artificial Intelligence Clinical Application Committee of the Guangdong Medical Doctor Association, a member of the Medical Imaging Committee of the Chinese Society of Image and Graphics, and a member of the Medical Artificial Intelligence Society of the Chinese Society of Biomedical Engineering. He has long been engaged in research in medical imaging analysis, medical big data analysis, and machine learning. He has led several prestigious research projects, including grants from the Susan G. Komen Foundation, key projects under the National Natural Science Foundation's Tianyuan Fund, key international cooperation projects under the Ministry of Science and Technology's Key R&D Program, key R&D projects of the Ministry of Science and Technology, major special funds for cutting-edge and key technological innovation in Guangdong Province, and projects under the Ministry of Education's Major Science and Technology Infrastructure Cultivation Program. He also serves as the Chief Expert for the Graduate Education Thematic Case Project of the Academic Degree Center of the Ministry of Education. As the first completer, he received the Second Prize of the Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award. He participated in formulating one international standard for artificial intelligence and three domestic industry standards for AI medical devices. He has published over 100 academic papers and transferred six patented inventions.

Prof. Weishi Zheng, Sun Yat-sen University, China

Cheung Kong Scholar Distinguished Professor

My English name is Jason. I have joint SUN YAT-SEN University since Jan. 2011 under the one-hundred-people program. And I have been a full professor since Jan. 2016. I have been a Deputy Director of Key Laboratory of Machine Intelligence and Advanced Computing, Ministry of Education since July 2016. 

My early research was on face recognition based on subspace methods, when I worked for Ph.D. degree in Applied Mathematics with Prof. Jianhuang Lai and Prof. Pong C. Yuen at Sun Yat-sen University and Hong Kong Baptist University. I have been a visiting student working with Prof. Stan Z. Li at the Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences. There, I started my research on sparsity learning for pattern recognition with sparse one-sided non-negativity matrix factorisation.

After 2008, I worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher on the European SAMURAI project for person association with Prof. Shaogang Gong  and Dr. Tao Xiang. In Queen Mary University of London, I proposed to use relative comparison to overcome the ill-posed matching problem between the appearance of people across non-overlapping camera views. The idea was also extended to group of people association. I also created an i-LIDS dataset for evaluating this matching problem. 

After I joined Sun Yat-sen University in 2011, I am now focusing on three research areas: 1) person re-identification under challenging scenarios, 2) action prediction and group activity recognition, and 3) the related large scale machine learning research (hashing for fast search, unsupervised learning, and deep learning).

Prof. Lei Wang, China University of Mining and Technology, China

Lei Wang, male, holds a Ph.D. and is a professor, serving as a supervisor for both doctoral and master’s students. He completed his postdoctoral training at the Chinese Academy of Sciences and has been recognized as a provincial high-level talent, a provincial outstanding young talent, a provincial leading young talent, and a Western Young Scholar of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

His research primarily focuses on pattern recognition, big data analysis, large AI models, and bioinformatics. He has led over 10 research projects, including major national projects under the Ministry of Science and Technology, general projects and youth science fund projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Western Young Scholar Program of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, provincial outstanding youth projects, provincial key projects, provincial general projects, and China Postdoctoral Science Foundation projects. He has published more than 90 papers in journals ranked in the first tier of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, IEEE Transactions journals, and journals and conferences recommended by the China Computer Federation. Among these, over 70 are SCI-indexed papers as the first author or corresponding author, including 15 papers in top-tier journals of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and more than 10 papers in IEEE series journals. His work has been cited over 3,400 times on Google Scholar, with an H-index of 35.

He serves as a reviewer for international journals such as IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering, IEEE Transactions on Cybernetics, IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks and Learning Systems, PLoS Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Briefings in Bioinformatics, and Molecular Therapy. He is currently a member of the IEEE, the China Computer Federation, and the Bioinformatics Committee of the Jiangsu Society of Biotechnology.

Researcher Bo Tang, Southern University of Science and Technology, China

National Science Fund for Excellent Young Scholars

Bo Tang received the PhD Degree in the Department of Computing at Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He was a member of Database Research Group. He was supervised by Dr. Ken Yiu. He was a visiting researcher at MonetDB group (Amsterdam) and Microsoft Research Asia (Beijing). Before that, he obtained his BEng degree in computer science from Sichuan University.

My research interests are in the area of data management (i.e., database/big-data systems, query processing). In particular, I focus on improving query time efficiency and data analytical result accuracy. I do research because I really enjoy it. Especially, I want to do top research work which will make a difference to our life.

Assoc. Prof. Zitong Yu, Great Bay University, China

National Overseas High-Level Talent

I am currently an Associate Professor (Tenured) of computer science at Great Bay University, leading the YU Vision (YUV) Group. I was a Postdoctoral researcher at ROSE Lab, Nanyang Technological University, working with Prof. Alex Kot. I also serve as an advisor on rPPG-based healthcare for BioTrillion, USA. I received my PhD degree in CS at CMVS, University of Oulu in 2022 (supervised by Prof. Guoying Zhao). I was a visiting scholar at TVG, University of Oxford, from July to November 2021, supervised by Prof. Philip Torr. My research interests include computer vision, biometric security, and multimodal learning.
